Posts scrapped unnecessarily – Patent pending, Swedish method puts a stop to post scrapping

First to take part in the post project is Norrköping's local authority. To begin with Korroterm will coat new posts. Then when old posts need to be replaced new ones will be available. Paul Lundmark is an electrical engineer with the Technical Services department in Norrköping and he can see the advantages of thermoplastic coated lamp posts:

"Thermoplastics are very adhesive and they retain their colour for a long time. Galvanic precipitation decreases and because of this corrosion is prevented better than with other surface coatings." In this project we are working with E.ON ES Belysning, experts in the field of energy technology.

In Stockholm the durability and positive environmental impact of thermoplastics have been understood for some time. In central Stockholm and above all in the southern suburbs almost every third lamp post is coated with thermoplastic. This means over 50,000 posts.

"We started coating lamp posts with thermoplastic twenty years ago, and today it is our standard surface treatment. This also applies to other types of steel poles. The surface is very durable and effectively protects the posts against corrosion. This has meant that we avoid annual maintenance with all the scraping and painting that that entails. Instead all we have to do is touch up damage," says Sören Spetz, lighting engineer with Stockholms City traffic and public transport authority.
